Government Shutdown Impacts Non-Profits

by Oct 14, 2013Resources

The Federal Government shutdown is and will have a major impact on USA charities. Especially those that depend on the government for a portion of their funding. Above all, we wanted to share this important information.

A Government Shutdown Has Great Effects On NonProfits

In the Alliance’s annual survey on the impact of the economy earlier this year, Arizona nonprofits reported they would not be able to meet the increased demand for their services. This is the first time since the beginning of the Great Recession. Moreover, this mirrored national data collected by Nonprofit Finance Fund.
Unfortunately, that was before a government shutdown would further increase demand for their services. Daily headlines remind us of the impact of the federal government shutdown has on real people. Especially the people served by nonprofits. Nevertheless, this impact is not moving Congress. It’s time for us to lift our voices on behalf of our communities. Lawmakers need to know how much our communities are hurting.

Advocating For Those In Need

The government shutdown does more than strain our nonprofits. After all, real people become affected. Human and community needs don’t simply stop because the federal government is shut down. In fact, they actually increase.
Non-profit leaders have a resiliency. They work hard on the issues, but the enormous challenges they face require help. In other words, to meet the challenges of the community, they need help from leadership in the public sector. After all, our elected officials serve the community along with these non-profits. No one knows better exactly what the community needs and how to help. These two bodies must meet in the middle fully participating together.

Our communities are in jeopardy during this government shutdown. It is important to realize just how impactful non-profits are on the people who need them. When other government resources aren’t available, people in need may not know where to turn. It’s time to take action and let the elected officials know who matters the most.
All things considered, it’s time to put a plan into action. Below you’ll find multiple ways to get involved.

What You Can Do:

First, take action today! Urge your representatives in Washington to immediately end the government shutdown and vote for a clean continuing budget resolution. Specifically one without other conditions in order to stop the current government shutdown as soon as possible. Second, don’t just sit on the sidelines. Be informed about policy decisions that impact your non-profit. Get involved through initiatives like voter engagement. Third, share your experience so we can help tell your story. In addition, you can share any resources you have turned to during this time that might help other non-profits.

With this in mind, make the connection in your communications with supporters. Inform them of your increased demand for services, threatened budgers, or needs of their neighbors. Overall they are your supporters and can provide key funds and volunteer hours during this tough time. Raise your voice and protect the sector by becoming a member of the Alliance.
