The Key
The Key is a symbol we see every day and may not even know the significance of. Of course, at the very heart of the matter, a key is used to open locks. Whether you’re unlocking a door, a chest, or your own heart, the key is used to let others (or ourselves) gain access to unknown worlds. Beyond a lock, there are magical things that await each of us. Not only are locks used to gain access to things, but they are also used to lock away things that are precious to us. Much of the symbolism of keys revolves around locks, secrets, and superstitions.
When it comes to charms, keys signify everything from authority to possibility and even love. A key charm is held close to the heart of the person wearing it. It can signify a pathway to freedom, an expression of a desire to explore the world and keep someone close to their heart. In many cultures, key charms or pendants are given to males and females on their 21st birthday to represent the start of the rest of their lives. They are also given to graduates and anyone who is ready to start a new. No matter what the situation or occasion, the key is symbolic of opening yourself up, locking yourself away, or ready to take on new experiences.
